The design maximizes exhibition space, allows for natural light and creates continuity with the street as well as integrates an outdoor courtyard / multi purpose space. <image:title>Art Gallery: Lombard Freid 19th St. - The Perspective Concept</image:title>
<image:caption>To emphasize the spatial connection to the courtyard and establish an organizing principle to the design, the Italian Renaissance technique of enhanced perspective was employed. An axial connection from the main gallery space through the project/video room to the rear courtyard space was established.</image:caption>

<image:title>Art Gallery: Lombard Freid 19th St. - The Perspective Concept</image:title>
<image:caption>An eye level focal point was established on the exterior wall of the courtyard, which was used as the generator for the geometry in both plan & section of the spaces. All elements of the main gallery, reception desk, corridor and secondary gallery are controlled by this vanishing point. This is achieved through the sloping and canting of surfaces and in the subtlety of the lighting design.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The north facing storefront facade was not obscured in order to gain maximum street presence for the gallery and capture the northern sky daylight. In order to take full advantage of the existing tall glass facade, the gallery ceiling slopes up to meet the storefront framing system. Track lighting and linear air diffuser are integrated seamlessly.</image:caption>

<image:title>Art Gallery: Lombard Freid 19th St. - Project Room</image:title>
<image:caption>The Project Room design resolves it's geometry around a structural column and exterior doors to the courtyard. This animates the ceiling design. The full height sliding frosted glass door demises the project room from the reception ans main gallery areas when needed. The guiding perspective lines are etched on the frosted glass so that when the door is closed the perspective continues.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The formal design is a response to the nature of the museum's project room space. With a sloping floor and angled walls the repository for the objects has both an angled base and level "table" section in which simple wood boxes act as the containers for the objects. As objects are collected, boxes are inserted into the table. The table section is also oriented on axis with compass north as an orientation device- causing a shift against the center of the project room space.</image:caption>

The project was awarded Design Distinction in the Environments category in ID magazine’s annual design review. Lee Mingwei’s performative artworks are rooted in basic, ephemeral everyday acts. <image:title>The Letter Writing Project Whitney Museum - The Way Stations</image:title>
<image:caption>The Letter Writing Project is an interactive installation that encourages participants to take a private moment and write letters that they always wanted to write but never did. Letters are written to friends, loved ones, or even the deceased. This installation creates a space conducive to performing this private act in a public space. The letter writing stations transform an otherwise frenetic urban environment into a contemplative sanctuary.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Letter Writing Project Whitney Museum - Seated & Kneeling Positions</image:title>
<image:caption>The letter writing stations are positioned in the subdued light of the museum gallery. Visitors are drawn to the lantern-like illuminated writing stations with the silhouettes of previously written letters and perhaps someone writing a letter within the translucent glass walls. Inside each station is a table with writing paper, envelopes and a pen. There are three booths, each with a table at different heights accommodating standing, sitting or kneeling postures. These correspond to the three meditative positions of Ch’an Buddhism and to the sentiments of gratitude, insight and forgiveness. Letters are placed in holders on the translucent walls and are displayed for visitors to read. They accumulate and are mailed regularly by the artist.</image:caption>

Shelves are provided on which patrons deposit their gifts, which are taken to the museums collection as they accumulate.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The original Asian inspired 1965 gravel rock garden was removed and terrazzo extended to the window and connected to the exterior terrazzo at the sidewalk extending the space. The planter box penetrates the window wall with plantings blurring inside and out. The structural column with its flaring top is interpreted as a tree via the use of tromp l'oeil painting with the elliptical solid walnut bench around the "tree" all recalling a traditional english garden. <image:caption>The northern end terminated abruptly in the air where the structure was cut from the demolished section. Pedestrians were able to access the highway level via the original vehicular access ramps. The structure afforded panoramic views of the river. This proposal was to create a proper terminus for this new promenade. The terminus is disconnected from the highway acting as a symbolic gatehouse and destination, creating a focal point along the promenade.</image:caption>

<image:title>Grandfathers Incline Montalvo Arts Center - Grandfather's Incline Design</image:title>
<image:caption>This proposal is to create a viewing platform that visitors would also hike to in order to appreciate the landscape and meditate. The design is abstracted to fundamental elements. A simple platform oriented to the ideal view with seating meets a mountain path. The platform contains a single tree representing the ideal landscape. The structure is supported discretely with simple wood pilings blending with the surrounding forest.</image:caption>
